Our story
Over the years, I'd become used to the jarring clatter of kitchen knives on bamboo chopping boards. I tried cheap plastic boards but they ended up turning brown and just looked nasty. I drew the line at big slabs of oak at eye-watering prices.
My chopping boards were OK but somethiing was missing.
This was the impetus for starting Papa Oki in 2020: to re-invent the chopping board and make food prep better and more enjoyable. Working in product design for many years, I spent long hours with pro chefs, talented home cook, kitchen newbies. I saw what worked but also the food mess, the frustration, the workarounds in all its revealing glory. I saw the problems and set out to fix them.
The right board needed to be versatile, fun to use and something you’d be happy keeping on your countertop. It had to be good enough to give to a family member at Christmas. And it had to be kind to the planet.
From our first sketches to selling our first board took nearly two years. But after receiving out first positive reviews we know it had been worth the wait.
We care deeply about the planet and creating a business that gives back to nature. That’s why we support One Tree Planted- a non-profit organisation commiitted to reforestation across the world. From the start, we decied to create more wood than we use by planting one tree for every product sold. To date, we've planted thousands of trees acrtoss the world.
We’re working on new product designs all the time so if you have any feedback, ideas or want to collaborate, please get in touch at hello at papa-oki.com
